Day 0 (Friday 09/08/06) – Monticello to Ely
We left home a little late (just before noon). This was fortunate for me, as I needed the time to prepare! I got the new canoes up on the rack early, tried to start the tractor for last minute chores (dead battery, of course), and packed up my stuff. I went over the list twice and still missed my wool shirt.
- Start packing earlier
- Don’t leave finishing the canoes to the night before!
- Remember wool shirt, extra fishing leaders.
Stopped for fast food in Big Lake, and got to Ely without any problems. We did take a side trip to Gander Mountain in Duluth, since I neglected to bring an F-18 map. I also was trying to find a wool shirt – none in yet!
The straps I used for the canoes worked much better than ropes (not as much stretch?). I finally found a nice wool sweater at Piragis Northwoods Company (http://www.piragis.com/). We had supper at the Ely Steak House and got to Fall Lake Campground around 7:30. I had reserved a campsite by internet as they were full last year (new facilities).
One member couldn’t find his flashlight, one couldn’t find his book, and I couldn’t find my water bottle, so back to town (Piragis is open until 9:00). All three items were found in the car later!
Very cool at night – near freezing (glad I got the sweater). Fall Lake campground facilities now include heated bathrooms and showers (code required to enter).
