Day 3  (Monday 09/11/06) – Fauquier Lake to McEwen Lake

Cool night, no problems.  Tom has no ill-effects from the fall – not even noticeable bruising!  We had a quick breakfast (cream of wheat/oatmeal and cocoa) and nice sunrise in the fog and mist.  We were on the water at 8:00.

A lot of portaging today, as we are heading through the McEwen Creek chain.  McEwen Creek was mostly open, with a lot of reeds in some places.  The last piece into McEwen Lake had a beaver dam on it

Most of the ribs in Tom’s canoe are now broken, and we’re concerned about buckling, not just oil-canning.  We tested it kneeling and it works just fine that way.  May be a long trip!

I caught two really nice smallies for supper, one on a Little Cleo, and one on a 4” white grub.  We fished with one person sitting in the middle to assure no buckling issues.  I broke my last steel leader in the canoe, trying to hold up the smallie.

Supper was smallmouth, hash browns (with Parmesan) and pudding.  Cell phone doesn’t work here, even with the external antenna and some climbing.  The last good connection was at Fauquier.

We’ll try kneeling while paddling tomorrow to Wet Lake, then decide whether to return or push on.
