Day 5  (Wednesday 09/13/06) – Kawnipi to Sunday Lake

No fog today – up at 5:30, water boiling and packing up.  Not much of a sunrise picture, but scrambled eggs and cinnamon rolls.  Now that we have the instructions for the dried eggs, they turned out great!  Too little water in the previous attempts.

We left at 7:30 for Murdoch, then portages to Agnes River (west channel); on Agnes at 10:30.  More portages than normal due to low water levels.  We met a couple (and 2 ˝ y.o. kid) traveling with Grandpa (solo) headed for Reed lake.  They were our first human sighting since Louisa Falls.

Stopped for lunch around noon (and a couple of times for breaks, too).

Long, warm haul down Agnes, but little (or no) wind the whole way.  We stopped for pictures at the “normal” pictograph and the petroglyph.  The one on the southern half of Agnes was too faded last time to even see much.

We bulled over the portage to Meadows Lake, and pushed on to Sunday Lake.  We got in about 5:30 – no fishing, but pasta with reconstituted hamburger, salsa and the last of the pudding.

We did come up with a song along the way (to the tune of Rawhide! – apologies to the Blues Brothers):

Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’

Though the seat is broken

Keep them paddles movin’

Portage! (the French pronunciation)

Rain and wind and weather

Keep ‘em close together,

Sure glad my gal’s not by my side

All the things I’m missin’

Good food, love and kissin’

Are waiting at the end of my ride

Put ‘em in, pull ‘em out, put ‘em in, pull ‘em out

Put ‘em in, pull ‘em out, Portage!

Load ‘em up, take ‘em out, put ‘em in, pull ‘em out,

Load ‘em up, Portage!

Keep movin’ movin’ movin’

Though their isapproving’

Keep them paddles movin’

Portage!

Don’t try to understand them

Just paddle, hoist and load ‘em

Soon we’ll be living high and wide

My heart is calculating

My true love will be waiting

Be waiting at the end of my ride

Put ‘em in, pull ‘em out, put ‘em in, pull ‘em out

Put ‘em in, pull ‘em out, Portage!

Load ‘em up, take ‘em out, put ‘em in, pull ‘em out,

Load ‘em up, Portage!

Bed at 8:30.
